Giving Back

This month, elementary students are working on their annual service project. Students in grades 1-5 are collecting food for MACOA, the Montgomery Area Council on Aging. MACOA promotes independent, dignified, and meaningful living for senior citizens through a variety of programs like Meals on Wheels, The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, and events at the Archibald Senior Center to more than 5,000 seniors per month. STJ students are also decorating bags with holiday greetings and messages of hope, gratitude, and good cheer. These bags will be used to transport the donated food and items to seniors in our area. During counseling lessons, Ms. Gibson, elementary counselor, will discuss the project with students and why it is important to give back to others. We all have so much to be thankful for and Saint James School is excited to parter with MACOA and be part of their mission.

A Whole New Mind

whole+new+mind.jpg

This week in science class, middle school students were introduced to A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink. They took a quiz to determine if they are left-brained learners or right-brain learners. Typically, right-brain learners prefer a spontaneous, creative, discovery-based learning environment which is focused on presenting information in a visual manner. If you're mostly analytical and methodical in your thinking, you're said to be left-brained.

Students discussed their results and then completed an activity in their interactive notebooks. Throughout the semester, students will analyze if the activities and lessons engage the left brain or right brain and strategies to use both.

Festival of Lights

IMG_2111.JPG

Happy Friday! This week, STJtv Season 6 episode 7 features two “Videos of the Week” to explain the Hindu holiday Diwali. Diwali is this Sunday, October 27. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning "rows of lighted lamps". Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is celebrated every autumn with firework displays, decorations, feasts and sweets, prayers, and other celebratory events.

“We have candles all around and light sparklers and firecrackers. We also do rangoli (sand art) and go to temple.”

Aditi (3rd grade) and Aradhya (Pre-K4)

STJtv is Saint James School’s official elementary news station. The program is open to 4th and 5th graders to apply with an audition. All STJtv cast and crew must have excellent academic grades, conduct grades, and attendance. The students come up with the ideas for their segments. Mr. Zach Beard, STJtv advisor, helps write the scripts, films and edits the segments each week. Check out the STJtv channel to see past videos!

Homecoming 2019

STJ is out of this world! Today we celebrate our school and welcome alumni back to campus. High school students enjoyed a picnic on the quad before the entire school gathered to watch the homecoming parade. We capped off the day with a pep rally featuring one of our favorite traditions, the senior/mom dance. We cheered for our athletic teams and announced our homecoming court and queen, senior Sarah Rice. We can’t wait to see everyone on Carlisle field at 7pm when we kickoff against Prattville Christian Academy. Go Trojans!
